Life in the pit lane

The Mercedes pit crew prepare for Michael Schumacher in Singapore © Getty Images
Away from the world of multi-million-pound car development laboratories and drivers whose small change takes care of the Monte Carlo harbour fees, another drama will play out in Singapore this week. The Independent's David Tremayne joins F1's unsung heroes.
These are not select millionaires but up to 16 ordinary, yet gifted, guys; team mechanics who have worked their way up the system and often migrate from team to team, are paid real-world wages of between 30,000 and 50,000 a year, are drilled to perfection ? and whose split-second synchronisation brings their teams huge rewards.

A sort-of day off

Today I am in the UK and going to have lunch with the folk at Mercedes GP. It is not just me, I should add, but all the British F1 press guys. It is a “tradition” that goes back to the days when the team was called Honda, although the venue has changed from Le [...]

Keeping Montezemolo busy

Luca di Montezemolo is a busy man these days. In addition to running Ferrari – and making ill-considered remarks about Bernie Ecclestone – he is in the process of trying to launch a political party to unite Italy’s fragmented political centre, in order to create a platform which would allow current Prime Minister Mario Monti [...]

Schumacher: I?ve Matured Due To Mercedes Experience

Michael Schumacher says that he has developed as a person following his spell with Mercedes. The seven-time champion struggled in his second spell in the sport, failing to find podium finishes and race wins with the same regularity as he did at Ferrari. Reflecting on his three years with the Silver Arrows, Schumacher believes he [...]

Grosjean: I?ve Learned A Lot

Romain Grosjean has claimed that he?s learnt a lot from the 2012 season. The Frenchman returned to the sport with Lotus and enjoyed a mixed campaign. Podiums and points were balanced out by rookie errors and crashes leading to criticism from rival drivers such as Mark Webber. Grosjean, who received a race ban for the [...]

AUTOart's 1:18 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Makes for a Sweet Holiday Present

If somebody told you that they wanted a Lamborghini Aventador for Christmas, there?s a good chance that you probably wouldn?t be able to afford it. Fret not, as AUTOart has a reasonable alternative in the form of a 1:18 scale model of the mighty Aventador.

The downside to giving this scale model as a Christmas gift is the obvious fact that nobody?s going to be able to drive it. Apart from that, this scale model has all the tools to be a hot seller for the holidays.

The detailing of this Giala Orion Aventador is mighty impressive, particularly the interior, which was done so intricately that a lot of details contained in it can actually be found on the actual supercar. The kind of attention to detail needed to make that possible is incredible and goes to show just how finely built this scale model is.

Here?s the other caveat: this scale model doesn?t come cheap at all. We assume that in large part because of the intricate design of the model ? on top of the royalties paid to Lambo ? but AUTOart has priced it at a whopping ?168, which is about $220 based on current exchange rates.

But if someone?s insistent enough to want an Aventador for the holidays, you can make that person happy without having to burn holes in your wallet.

Acura RLX

The anticipated reveal of the replacement for the Acura RL has finally made its debut at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. The all-new Acura RLX will make its production debut in early-2013, as a 2014 model year, giving Honda?s luxury lineup a head start for 2014.

We were all starting to wonder exactly what was in store for the RLX, since Acura announced its debut. Some of the questions that arose were around its power plant and whether or not this would simply be a restyled RL with an ?X? on the end of its nameplate.

Acura answered all of those pertinent questions and then some at the auto show, as it pulled the sheet off of the new RLX and surprised everyone with a vehicle that bears little to no resemblance to its predecessor, something Honda Motor Company does not typically do. For the most part, Hondas tend to evolve rather slowly, with the exception of the latest Civic model, and rarely do we see big-time changes.

This all-new sedan is set to do battle with two newly redesigned imports, both of which debuted at the same auto show. On one side, you have the completely refreshed Toyota Avalon and on the other side, you have the redesigned Lexus ES 300h.

Can the RLX possibly fend off these two sister vehicles?

Update 11/28/2012: Acura has unveiled the production model RLX and we have updated the gallery and the review with the pictures of the all-new production-ready RLX.

Hit the jump to find out.

Campaign launched to save Team Lotus

© Save Team Lotus
One side of the Lotus naming dispute has been put forward on a new and in-depth webpage called www.saveteamlotus.com. The basic background is that the Lotus Racing F1 team had its naming rights revoked for next season by Group Lotus and, in order to keep racing under the Lotus name, bought the Team Lotus brand off David Hunt, who had owned it since the original team?s last race in 1994. Group Lotus has now taken Lotus Racing to court to try and stop it using the historic name in Formula One next year. The issue has been a source of constant confusion for many fans and the new webpage offers a breakdown of David Hunt?s and Team Lotus? side of the argument.

Massa threatened with jail over team orders

© Getty Images
Brazil?s F1 fever may have overstepped the mark after a local prosecutor threatened Felipe Massa with a six-year jail term if he ?defrauds? the sporting public by letting Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso past at Sunday?s grand prix. The story, reported by a local paper and picked up by the Daily Telegraph, is the latest of several anti-Massa reports to emerge from his home country since the team orders controversy at the German Grand Prix earlier this year. The Daily Telegraph's Tom Cary reckons that Massa simply isn't living up to his home crowd's high expectations.
?A public raised on a diet of Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna were simply appalled and saddened in equal measure by Massa?s apparent lack of ambition.?

Cadillac ATS by D3

When it comes to tuning Cadillacs, few rank higher than D3. It is, after all, the maker of the Le Monstre CTS-V, a car that we first saw at the 2011 SEMA Auto Show.

During this year?s SEMA show, D3 was back in full force again, presenting a new program for the Cadillac ATS, which includes a new body kit. This kit consists of a revised front bumper, side skirts with optional air foils, a new roof spoiler and a rear deck lid spoiler. All these parts were built by D3 itself and comes with OEM mounting points.

On top of all the aesthetic upgrades, D3 also treated the ATS with some mechanical upgrades, including installing an adjustable coil-over suspension system that can be lowered and the spring rate adjusted to the driver?s preference or track. The ATS? suspension system also received an aftermarket lowering module that consists of two settings — "Street" or "Competition? — to help give it an extra edge in the twist. Finally, the standard air intake was also replaced by a genuine bolt-on D3 air-intake system.

These upgrades may look subtle now, but rest assured, D3 has something in store for all of us. It has built a reputation as one of the best Cadillac tuner in the world.

Pretty high expectations, sure, but D3 has earned it.
