Hyundai announces new 204 HP turbo engine


Shortly after Hyundai unveiled the Veloster at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show it was rumored that the small sports coupe will also get a turbo version. Today the company has officially announced the new Gamma 1.6 T-GDI engine, however, without offering a confirmation if this is or not the engine to be used in the future Veloster Turbo.

The Gamma 1.6 T-GDI engine was developed over a period of 52 months and cost 69.5 billion. According to Hyundai it delivers the best performance figures in its class: it delivers a total of 204 HP and a peak torque of 195 lb-ft.

This incredible figure have been obtained using an exhaust manifold integrated turbocharger with twin scroll, air guided intercooler, direct fuel injection system and dual CVVT.

"Due to stricter environmental regulations and policies that vary from nation to nation, competition in the development of powertrains and other core technologies is intensifying," said Woong-Chul Yang, Hyundai Motor Co. Vice Chairman. "Hyundai Motor will accelerate its efforts to develop future powertrains that feature high-performance and eco-friendly engines and transmissions."
